Legal automation solutions
Most of what slows a commercial firm down is not legal work — it is matter inception, conflicts and CDD checks, time capture, e-billing rework and file closure. We build automations that sit inside your existing DMS and practice management stack, inherit your information barriers, and hand anything judgement-shaped back to a fee earner. Privilege and confidentiality are design constraints here, not an afterthought.
Use cases
- Runs conflicts and CDD checks at matter inception, compiling Companies House and sanctions results for your risk team
- Drafts engagement letters and scope terms from your precedents, routed for partner sign-off before anything is sent
- Turns calendar, email and document activity into draft time narratives fee earners confirm rather than type
- Pre-checks e-bills against each client's outside counsel guidelines, flagging block billing and wrong UTBMS codes
- Files inbound email and attachments to the correct iManage or NetDocuments workspace with consistent profiling
- Tracks undertakings, key dates and limitation deadlines across matters, chasing the fee earner before anything expires
- Monitors CDD refresh and source-of-funds evidence, chasing clients and keeping your AML register current
- Runs file closure: confirms undertakings discharged and bills settled, then archives to your retention schedule
Common workflow problems
- Matter opening takes days because conflicts, client due diligence and engagement terms crawl between risk, finance and the fee earner by email.
- Fee earners reconstruct their week on a Friday afternoon, and the vaguest time narratives are written off at billing.
- E-bills bounce off outside counsel guidelines for block billing or wrong task codes, and lock-up stretches.
- Half the matter file lives in personal Outlook folders, so the DMS record is incomplete when someone leaves.
- Undertakings, limitation dates and CDD refreshes sit in spreadsheets nobody owns until the SRA or your insurer asks.
How we help
- We integrate through your DMS and practice management APIs, inheriting matter-level permissions and ethical walls rather than copying files into another silo.
- Drafting is grounded in your own precedents, playbooks and house style, with every extracted fact linked back to its source document in the file.
- Checks run against authoritative sources — Companies House, sanctions lists, your conflicts database — never against the model's memory.
- Judgement calls route to people: a conflict that needs waiving, unusual source of funds or a scope change lands with the right partner, evidence attached.
- Every agent action is logged per matter, giving your COLP and PI insurer a clean audit trail, on EU infrastructure under a DPA.
Systems we work with in this sector
We build around the stack commercial firms already run: iManage, NetDocuments, Elite 3E, Aderant Expert, Intapp, BigHand, Relativity, DocuSign, LEAP and Clio.
Frequently asked questions
- How do you handle privileged and confidential matter data?
- Client data stays on EU infrastructure under a DPA and is never used to train models, and agents inherit your DMS permissions — a matter behind an information barrier is invisible to them. Your confidentiality duties under the SRA Code are the constraint we design to, and we will put that in writing for your COLP.
- Will this work with our iManage and Elite 3E setup?
- Yes — we build against the supported APIs for iManage, NetDocuments, 3E, Aderant and Intapp rather than screen-scraping, and we respect your security groups and ethical walls. Where a system has no usable API we say so upfront and design around it. Nothing gets ripped out or replaced.
- What should a firm not automate?
- Legal judgement. We do not automate advice, settlement positions, whether a conflict is waivable, the giving of undertakings, or anything close to a reserved legal activity — agents prepare, check and chase, while a solicitor decides and signs. If output cannot cite its source in the matter file, it does not go to a client.
- Where do firms usually start?
- Somewhere contained with an obvious owner and measurable pain: matter inception and conflicts, e-bill pre-checking, or CDD refresh chasing. We map the process with your risk team, deploy to one practice group first, and widen matter type by matter type once they trust the audit trail.
